-FAQ-
Why do pianos need to be tuned?
Regular service helps prolong your piano's life. A cared for piano is a happy piano and in turn helps aid a happier player. Changes in temperature and humidity are the main culprits in making a piano go out of tune. These fluctuations cause the wood in your piano to expand and contract, changing the string tension and therefore causing the piano to go out of tune. It is recommended, especially in Wisconsin, to get your piano tuned 2+times per year.
How often should my piano be tuned?
It is generally agreed upon that a piano should be tuned at least twice per year. There are however factors that go beyond that general tuning timeline.
New Piano: New pianos come with new strings that will stretch much more than older strings. New pianos will need to be tuned more frequently to allow the strings to stretch and for the piano to adjust to the conditions of it's new home.
Frequent Use: Pianos that may be used more frequently on average may need to be tuned more than the recommended twice per year. Certain environments, for example a church or school piano that experiences frequent temperature fluctuations, can contribute to the stability of a tuning and may require more frequent tuning visits.
Concert pianos are typically tuned before each performance.
What is your service area?
My primary service area includes all locations within a 1-hour driving distance from downtown Stevens Point, Wisconsin. I am happy to service pianos outside my primary dedicated service area for a small fee. This fee is only applied if the piano needing service is more than a 1 hour drive from Stevens Point, WI. For locations outside of an hour drive, a flat rate mileage fee of $25 is added. I will travel as far as 1.5 hours, making Green Bay, Baraboo, Black River Falls, Tomahawk all feasible. If you are outside the bookable service area, don't hesitate to send a message- we'll always see what is possible!
What if it has been a while since my piano was tuned?
That's okay! It can still be serviced but it will likely require a pitch correction. Pitch corrections bring the piano back to where it sounds best and allows for the piano to be played simultaneously with other accompanying instruments. Pitch corrections are an additional charged service.
How should I prepare for the visit?
If time is available to take everything that may be sitting on the piano off it is always appreciated by piano technicians. The technician will need access to the inner workings of the piano. Any efforts to keep noise levels to a minimum will also help the process and are always appreciated.
